Monday Open – 27th September 2010
Monday Open – 20th September 2010
The recent heavy rains put paid to Saturday’s main event at Strabane Golf Club. By Sunday, the course had made a remarkable recovery to such an extent that the finalists in the club matchplay events were able to contest their matches in almost ideal conditions. Results of the finals were as follows:
The Jones Cup: Stephen McCay beat Conal Cooke 6&5
The Gallagher Cup: Jason Kelly beat Gary King 5&4
The Lawson Cup: Tommy Sharkey beat John Hegarty 3&1
Most of the scheduled events earlier in the week were able to proceed, though not without some disruption. Only a handful of entrants for the Monday Open were able to complete their rounds, the best of these being Vincent Bradley who posted a creditable 39 points to get home by three from runner-up Keith Patterson.
The ladies’ “Bertie Colhoun Cup” was able to proceed unhindered on Tuesday, with Mandy Coyne making the most of the improved conditions to card a winning 30 points. Monica McGettigan and Margaret Bonner each returned 29 points to top Category 0-24 and Category 25-36 respectively.
Wednesday’s mixed event saw Stuart McFeeters and Noreen McNally take the honours with 24 points, though they were pressured all the way by Pat and Maeve Corry who carded a similar score only to be eased into second place on count-back. Just a point adrift of the leading pair were third placed Eamon McCay and Adeline Shiels.
Aidan Corry has been in outstanding form since returning to the game this season and he again took the spoils in Thursday’s Club Stableford, posting a fine 39 points to just edge out John Hegarty who matched the winner’s tally. Keith Patterson was again in the shake-up, this time taking third place with another solid one over par round of 38 points. Enda Kennedy shot a typically flawless two-under par 67 to assure himself of the gross award.
There were joint winners in this week’s bridge competition. They were Mary Gallagher/Claire McGrath and Martin O’Neill/Alice O’Neill.

The Bank of Ireland Open, held at Strabane Golf Club on Saturday, was won by Liam “Pecker” Doherty who posted an excellent score of 41 points to get home by a point from Noel Kelly. Keith Patterson shot yet another tremendous one over par round to take third place with 39 points, while Conal Cooke went one better to take the gross award with a superb level par 69. Club President, Ben Corry, dropped only one shot to par in taking the Category One prize with 39 points, a tally matched by Category Two winner Gerard Walsh. Eddie McCrea topped Category Three with 37 points, while the nines were won by Jason Kelly and Freddie Patterson. Portsalon’s Clive Davidson was best visitor with 34 points.
The Owen Roe’s Classic on Sunday was the last of this season’s open team events. The competition attracted a good entry of 31 teams and produced the following result:
1. Sean Devine, Sean Sweeney, Neil McGlinchey, Brian O’Kane 99 points
2. Pat Corry, Sammy Devenney, Patsy Wilson, Eric Reid 98 points
3. Denis Porter, Kevin Keegan, Joe Doherty, George Turner 97 points
4. Chris McDermott, Frankie Houston, Frankie Connolly, Hugh Casey 95 points
In Thursday’s Club Competition, Martin Elliott and Enda McDonnell were tied at the top with 41 points apiece. On count-back, Elliott was deemed the winner with Martin McCallion completing the podium, finishing third with 39 points. Paddy Kennedy conceded only a shot to par in taking the gross prize with 37 points, while Francis McGranaghan from Newtownstewart GC was the best of the visiting players with a score of 32 points.
The torrential rain of Monday played havoc with the early week’s schedule, though Wednesday’s mixed event, the Sausage Sizzle Foursomes, was able to proceed in conditions which were remarkable given the amount of rain that fell on the course. Peter Doherty and Lisa Patton posted the best score of the day, their 25 points seeing them home by one from Joe Doherty and Noreen McNally. Also on 24 points, and in third place, were Brian O’Kane and Annette Patton.
The semi-finals of the Club’s Team Challenge were played over the weekend. First up was the shoot-out between “Dixies” and Tommy Forbes Catering. In a tense finale, with the scores tied at two each, Sean Forbes produced a superb approach to the final green to register a tap-in birdie and send the Caterers through to the final on a 3-2 scoreline.
In the second ‘semi’, Haughey’s Costcutters went through with a 4-1 victory over Frylite One. Whilst the final score suggests a comfortable win for Haughey’s, it was far from that. Indeed, at one stage Frylite One were well in command, leading in four of the five matches. However, they were unable to sustain that momentum and it will be Haughey’s who contest the final in a couple of week’s time.
The Club’s Bridge Group had their inaugural meeting for the new season on Thursday last. Results were:
Fixtures:
Thursday September 16 Club Competition
Saturday September 18 McHugh Oils Medal
Monday September 20 Monday Open
Tuesday September 21 Ladies’ Weekly Competition
Wednesday September 22 Mixed
Looking a little further ahead, the Captain’s Outing to Greencastle GC will take place on Saturday, October 2, while the first of the popular JJ Team events has been scheduled for Monday, October 4.
The Daley’s Service Station Open at Strabane Golf Club on Saturday last almost fell victim to heavy rains which caused many of the morning starters to hoist the white flag and head for the shelter of the clubhouse. Not so Raymond McDermott, who played through the worst of the conditions to post an impressive winning points tally of 40. Whilst the afternoon players enjoyed much better weather, none were able to match McDermott’s fine effort. A few came very close, notably Terence McGranaghan and Ryan McGowan who each returned 39 point cards to finish second and third respectively. David Mullen’s 37 point total was best in Category One, while Brian Forester topped Category Two with 35 points. William Potts claimed the Category Three award with 37 points, and Brian O’Neill and Keith Patterson returned the best nines. Sean Forbes continued his recent run of good form to take the gross prize with a solid 74, while Portnoo’s Jim Harley was best visitor with 35 points.
Sunday’s Foyle Hospice Team Event, one of the biggest attractions of the season, produced one of the closest finishes in years. Three teams tied for the top spot, and after a lengthy count-back, the result was declared as follows:
1. Oliver Cresswell, Seamus Foley, Francie Conwell, Liam McCool 103 pts
2. Chris McDermott, Liam Patton, Seamus Devenney, Hugh Casey 103 pts
3. James McAllister, Eddie McHugh, John McGaughan, Patsy O’Donnell 103 pts
4. Oliver Doherty, James Doherty, Robert Doherty, Raymond Gallagher 102 pts
Ladies: Lauren Patton, Laura McCay, Angela Houston, Lisa Patton 98 pts
Thursday’s Club Shop Open was dominated by Damian Carey whose marvellous 43 points gave him a comfortable three points to spare over the field. Martin Elliott compiled a steady 40 points to take second place with Damien McCrossan in third place with a similar score. Ballybofey’s Bryan Reilly dropped only three shots to par in taking the gross prize with an excellent 72, while Newtownstewart’s John Bimson won the visitors’ prize with 36 points.
Keith Patterson has been a model of consistency through the summer season and his excellence was again rewarded in last Monday’s Open as he produced yet another level par 69 (40 points) to take the top award. Runner-up was Paul O’Reilly, also with 40 points, with Joe Elliott a point adrift in third place. The gross award went to Stephen McCay with a round of 74, while Matthew McGowan, playing out of Ballybofey, topped the visitors’ category with 32 points.
Lady President Olive Turner was in outstanding form in last Tuesday’s Foyle Hospice Charity, her winning score of 42 points seeing her home, though with little to spare. Alison Curry was best in the 0-24 category with 39 points, while the category 25-36 victor, Mary McCrory, pushed the winner all the way coming up short by a single point as she returned 41 points.
The popular Wednesday mixed event, which has proved to be so successful throughout the season, entered its final month of competition last week with victory going to Nigel Houston, Lisa Patton, Neil McGlinchey and Angela Houston with 40 points. Three points back in second place were Frankie and Caroline Connolly, Rory Doherty and Lauren Patton.
Congratulation to Tommy Forbes and his Lawson Cup Squad on their hard-fought victory over Dungannon in the final of the competition. After a tremendous away performance which saw them trailing by a single point, it would have been easy to assume that the trophy was in the bag. However, as to be expected, Dungannon came to the Ballycolman venue with a very different mind-set. Far from rolling over, the visitors put up a magnificent struggle and almost pulled off a memorable win. However, the Strabane team showed admirable composure to ride out the Dungannon storm and edge home to a deserved victory.
Finally, the Competition Committee ask that all matchplay semi-finalists ensure that their ties are played on or before September 17 so that the “Finals Day” can proceed as scheduled.
