“Snowball” Snatches STS

There was an excellent entry for the STS Open at Strabane Golf Club on Saturday last.  In conditions which were far from easy, a course softened by the rains of the previous days aligned to a stiff north-westerly breeze, Anthony “Snowball” Callaghan emerged as the winner with an excellent 18-hole tally of 40 points.  That gave him a one-point winning margin over runner-up John Etherson, who just held off third-placed Paddy Doyle on the break of a tie.  Cathal Patton played very well on the day to only concede two shots to par as he claimed the gross award with a fine round of 71.  Consistent Adrian McLaughlin posted 38 points to top Category One, while Aidan Coyle matched that score to emerge as Category Two winner.  Dermot Corry’s 37 points was the best return in Category Three, with George McCay and Rory Doherty having the best nines.

Players found good scores in Thursday’s Doherty’s Fuels Open almost as difficult to come by.  George Turner was a notable exception, his superb 42 point return ensuring that he picked up the top award.  Martin Foley was a point back in second place, with Ronan Foley a further point adrift in third position. Keith Patterson shot an impressive level par 69 to return the best gross score of the day, while Letterkenny’s Robert Bell carded 37 points to claim the visitors’ prize.

The Monday Open fell to a brilliant score of 44 points, carded by big-hitting Paul McGarrigle.  In second place and claiming all the plaudits for posting the round-of-the-week was Conal Cooke whose 43 point return reflected superb a four under par round of 65. Pearse McLaughlin was third with a fine 42 points, while Keith Patterson again took the gross honours with a one over par 70.  The visitors’ prize went to Delwyn Montgomery with a solid 38 points.

Bernie O’Kane was in sensational form in Tuesday’s Bank of Ireland Trophy.  She amassed a magnificent 42 points to put the rest of the field in the shade and, in the process, notched up valuable points in the race for the ‘Golfer of the Year’ accolade.  Rosemary Wilson had a 36 point return to top the 0-24 category, while Caroline Connolly carded the second-best score of the day, 38 points, to win the 25-36 category prize.

Wednesday’s Mixed Teams event produced the following result:

1. Ronan Foley, Mary McCrory, Noel McCrory, Shauna Patton                   43 points

2. Martin Rouse, Teresa Casey, Stephen Quinn, Mary Duffy                        41 points
