The first of the season’s ladies’ opens, The Well-Being Clinic Open, was held at Strabane Golf Club on Tuesday last and attracted a marvellous entry of almost 100 players, nearly half of whom were visitors from clubs across the north-west. In all, eleven different clubs had representatives at the highly competitive event. Best on the day was Castlerock’s Edna Derrick who posted a fine 40 points to just get home on the break of a tie from the best of the home contingent, Angela Houston. Portnoo’s Marie Callaghan, no stranger to the Ballycolman course, had a fine 39 point return to take third place, while Geraldine Crossan from City of Derry carded the best gross score off a handicap of nine.
Category winners were:
Category 0-18 Dympna Doherty (Strabane) 34 points
Category 19-28 Elizabeth Bennett (Castlerock) 38 points
Category 29-36 Maeve Crowe (Strabane) 39 points
Mary McCullagh (Newtownstewart) won the first nine with 22 points, with Roe Park’s Rosemary Doogan having the best return in the second nine, 19 points. Ann McNickle from Castlerock won the visitors’ prize with 36 points. A trio of Strabane players picked up the final awards. Olive Turner finished nearest the pin at the second hole, Shauna Patton had the longest drive on the eighteenth and Adeline Shiels picked up the ‘twos’ prize.
The ladies were again to the fore in Wednesday’s mixed event, with Pat and Maeve Corry accumulating a winning 26 points, one better than runners-up Denis Porter and Noreen McNally. Freddie Wilson teamed up with Caroline Connolly to card 24 points and finish third.
Stephen Quinn was in dominant form in last week’s Monday Open, his tremendous 45 point return ensuring that nobody could get within striking distance. Best of the rest was Paul Armstrong with a commendable 40 points, a score also posted by third placed Liam McDevitt. Paddy Kennedy seems to threaten par every time he competes these days, and he topped the gross category on this occasion with a level par 69. Ballybofey’s Frank McBrearty picked up the award for best visitor with a solid 38 points.
In the Thursday Open, Junior Boys’ Captain Ryan McGowan produced a sparkling 42 points to take the top award by a point. Runner-up was Bernard McShane who is beginning to recapture the form that previously marked him out as one of the club’s most improving players. The ever-consistent Paddy Doyle took third place with another rock-solid 41 points. Kieran Doherty had the best gross score on the day as he dropped only one shot to par in carding a near flawless round of 70.

Cliento's David McGoldrick with prize winners. Brian OKane standing in for winner Liam McGinley, 2nd Noel OKane and 3rd David Mullen with Captain Seamus Friel
Saturday’s Cilento Designer Wear Open drew a huge entry for one of the most attractive fixtures on the season’s schedule. No fewer that eight players breached the 40 point barrier, the best of these being a superb winning 43 points posted by Liam McGinley. Noel O’Kane’s excellent 42 points gained him second place with David Mullen taking third place with yet another fine score of 41 points. Enda Kennedy, playing off scratch, carded 38 points to take the gross award. Kevin McGinley (41 points), Mervyn Moore (39 points) and Angus Callaghan (40 points) topped categories one, two and three respectively. The nines went to Johnny Potts and Joey Roulston.
The top four teams to emerge from Sunday’s Team Challenge and so earn automatic qualification into the play-off stages were Haughey’s Costcutter, Tommy Forbes Catering, Toot Takes All and Frylite One. Best betterball score on the day, a brilliant 49 points, was posted by Ryan McGowan and Mark McDermott.

After posting a couple of significant scores towards the end of the winter season it was only a matter of time before Roy Patterson’s name appeared at the top of a leaderboard. In the Hugh Harley Open at Strabane Golf Club on Saturday last Patterson had a 41 point return to fulfil all those expectations. In a highly competitive event which attracted an entry of 200 players, he took the top award by a point from James Langan, with Gerry Casey a further point back in third place. Mark McColgan and Michael B Kennedy each carded 38 points to head Category One and Category Two respectively, while Terence McDermott’s 36 point return saw him through in Category Three. Paddy Kennedy had a fine two over par 71 in conditions which were far from easy to lift the gross prize, with the nines going to Donal Cairns and Paddy O’Kane.
The Holy Cross College Tanzanian Teams event was played at the Ballycolman course on Sunday with 48 teams vying for the excellent prizes on offer. The competition produced the following result:
1. Denis Porter, Kevin Keegan, Joe Doherty, George Turner 96 points
2. Brian O’Kane, Bernie O’Kane, Ann Sharkey, Adeline Shiels 93 points
3. Angela Houston, Laura McCay, Donna Doherty, Mary Duffy 92 points
4. John Hegarty, John Tinney, Martin Elliott, Damien Carey 91 points
The first of this season’s Monday Opens produced no surprises with David Mullen heading the table on 43 points. David has been making rapid progress over the past few months and as he gains further experience he will undoubtedly figure prominently in future events. Runner-up was Stephen McCay whose three over par card of 39 points gave him a point to spare over third placed Kevin McGinley. The gross award went to Enda Kennedy with a level par 69.
Keith Patterson was the top scorer in this week’s Thursday Club, his 35 point return just edging out Bernard McShane who amassed 34 points, one better than Pat O’Neill who finished third.
Running parallel with the regular Thursday event was the mid-week open which saw Kieran O’Neill post a fine 43 points to finish a point ahead of second-placed Keith Patterson. Third place went to Freddie Patterson, while Enda Kennedy again matched par to take the gross prize.
The Wednesday Mixed competition was played over a shortened course but still managed to attract a good entry of 28 pairs. It produced the following result:
1. Stuart McFeeters and Noreen McNally 25 points
2. Liam Patton and Lady Captain, Dympna Doherty 25 points
3. Frankie and Caroline Connolly 25 points
There was excellent scoring in last week’s Lady Captain’s Charity. Sandra O’Doherty and Monica McGettigan both carded 43 points, with the former declared the winner on countback. Donna Doherty was only a couple of points adrift in third place.
Mary Casey won the Easter Basket, her 36 points being one better than runner-up Annette Patton.
Finally, tickets for the annual Club Draw are now on sale at the club-house, with the usual array of superb prizes on offer.

A surprising number of players made light of difficult conditions to post excellent scores in Saturday’s Harkin Fireplaces medal event at Strabane Golf Club. Though the course was in beautiful condition, a stiff breeze ensured that it was a real test. Yet almost a dozen players managed to break par, the best of these being competition winner Oliver Cresswell. His superb 64 nett, off a handicap of 11, gave him a one shot victory over Aidan Langan. John Brolly also carded a round of 65 to take third place, while the in-form Jason Kelly shot a nett 67 to take Category One. After his enforced lay-off, Liam Patton is returning to his best, confirmed by the nett 65 he posted to top Category Two. Johnny Potts was best in Category Three with a 70 nett, with Kieran O’Neill and Michael Baldrick taking the first and second nines respectively. Paddy Kennedy’s four over par 73 gained him the gross award.
The mixed foursomes season got underway on Sunday with the traditional curtain-raiser, the “Captains’ Drive-In.” Lady Captain Dympna Doherty and Captain Seamus Friel set the ball rolling and were followed by a magnificent entry of 37 pairs. In the ensuing highly competitive event Lorna Duffy and Rory Doherty had a solid 39 point return to win the season opener. A shot behind, in second place, were Noreen and Oliver McNally, with third place going to Alice Houston and Foncie McNally with 35 points. The best gross score (9 over par) was carded by Norma Brogan and Paul McGill.
The dreadful conditions which prevailed on Easter Monday meant the postponement of the scheduled Brian Patton Day. The event will now take place on Sunday 29th August.
The latest round of the Thursday Club (Week 12) was dominated by Hugo McCusker who amassed a fine 36 points over the 15 allotted holes. Enda McDonnell was four points adrift of the winner in second place, with Cahir Doherty taking third place with 31 points.
In junior golf, Keelan Crawford carded 31 points to win the Donegal Sports Easter Stableford. Shay Callaghan had a similar return in finishing second, with Junior Captain Ryan McGowan third on 26 points.

The wintry conditions which threatened to pay havoc with the spring schedule at Strabane Golf Club relented to allow most of last week’s programme to proceed. Saturday’s Donegal Sports Open saw Martin Keys romp to victory, his superb 45 point haul giving him plenty to spare over the field. Raymond McDermott was the only other player to breach the 40 point barrier, his fine 41 point return assuring him of the runner’s-up prize. Michael Holland made a welcome return to form as he posted 39 points to finish third. Category One went to Jason Kelly with 38 points, with David Mullen taking Category Two with 37 points. Niall Coulter topped Category Three with 38 points while the best gross score on the day was Paddy Kennedy’s two over par 71.
Ronnie Wiley was the latest Thursday Club winner, taking Week 11 with a solid 34 points. Danny Duffy finished second with 32 points, with Kevin Keegan a point adrift in third place.
Results of the final JJ Monday Teams series were:
1. C. Patton, W. Doherty, O. McNally, T. McDermott 80 points
2. K. Gallagher, M. McColgan, S. McFeeters, C. McGrath 78 points
3. H. McCusker, E. Patton, J. Shiels, J. Henderson 78 points
