Only Hugo Breaks 40 point Barrier

The change in playing conditions at Strabane Golf Club seemed to take its toll on competitors in Saturday’s B. McNamee Ltd. Open stableford event.  After one of the driest winter periods for many years, the change to heavier underfoot conditions was certainly reflected in the scoring in the weekend’s competition.  Unlike the previous few weeks when scoring soared into the mid-forties, only one player on Saturday managed to break the 40 point barrier.  Hugo McCusker’s excellent winning 41 point return, off a handicap of 11, gave him a couple of points to spare over runner-up Adrian McDermott, playing off a 21 handicap. On the same 39 point mark was third-placed John Brolly, while Club President Ben Corry conceded only three shots to par in taking the gross award.  Peter Doherty, David Mullen and Cecil Kerr won the category awards, each with a score of 38 points while William Potts and John J. Duffy had the best nines.

The penultimate JJ Team Event was held last week and produced the following result:

1. H. McCusker, E. Patton, J. Shiels, J. Henderson                97 points

2. J. Wasson, Paul McGarrigle, H. Casey, T. Forbes              96 points

3. F. McNally, M. Forbes, S. McPhilemy,  J. Duncan            94 points

The Thursday Club is also nearing completion.  Week 10 of the series went to Anthony Callaghan with a fine 40 point return.  Jason Kelly finished second with 37 points, three points ahead of third-placed Kevin Keegan.

In ladies’ golf, Lorna Duffy posted 32 points to take the top award in the Breast Cancer Charity competition. Anne Sharkey’s 31 points was best in the 0-24 category, with Angela Houston claiming the 25-36 category prize with 30 points.

Lorna Duffy completed a notable double by winning the “Australian Spoons” in partnership with Lisa Patton.  Together they combined to amass a score of 37 points giving them a comfortable three points to spare over runners-up Catherine Neeson and Imelda Doherty.

Entries for the club’s “Team Challenge” must be submitted over the next fortnight, with the qualifying event due to take place on Sunday April 25.

The “Captain’s Drive-In” on Sunday April 11 will launch this season’s mixed foursomes programme.  The first of the weekly mixed events will be held the following Wednesday, April 14 (not April 7 as indicated in the fixture book).

Superb Scoring in John Kelly

The highlight of the John Kelly stableford competition at Strabane Golf Club on Saturday last was the superb 44 points posted by the winner, young Michael Etherson.  Such was his domination of the event that he had four points to spare over the field.  Roy Patterson, who himself had carded a score in the mid-forties a few weeks back, finished second on this occasion with the best of several scores of 40 points.  On the same mark was third placed Bob McCurry, with Keith Patterson taking the gross prize with a two-over par round of 71 (39 points).  Damian McGranaghan was three over for his round and claimed the Category One award with 39 points.  The Category Two prize went to Tommy Forbes, also with 39 points, while Johnny McGonagle topped Category Three with 40 points.  Angus Callaghan (23 points) and Ronnie Catterson (21 points) completed the leaderboard by taking the first and second nine prizes respectively.

The first of the season’s opens took place on St. Patrick’s Day with a stableford event over 18 holes.  Chris McDermott amassed an impressive 38 points to take the top award by a point from runner-up John Hegarty.  Barry Forester finished third on 36 points while Paddy Kennedy claimed the gross prize with a two-over 71.  Kennedy is in excellent form at the moment, underlined by his outstanding level par return at the difficult Glashedy links (Ballyliffin) in competition at the weekend.

The consistent Denis Porter had the best return in Week Nine of the Thursday Club, his 34 point return giving him a comfortable cushion over second placed Jim Arbuckle (30 points).  Liam McCool was a point further adrift in third place.

Results of last week’s JJ Monday Teams:

1. J. Arbuckle, M. Harkin, P. McGillian, P. Rouse                 77 points

2. F. McNally, G. Quinn, M. Forbes, S. McPhilemy              75 points

3. D. McGinley, L. McCool, C. Doherty, A. Callaghan         75 points

The ladies’ season got underway on Tuesday last with an “Opening Day Scramble” which produced the following result:

2. A. Sharkey, M. Crowe, N. McNally           28 points

3. C. Neeson, I. Doherty, A. O’Hagan           28 points

On the entertainment scene, it should be noted that the very popular “The Bizz” will be on stage on Easter Sunday night.

A Moment in Time DVD

On Sunday night past, a large crowd showed up at the club to watch the DVD of the recent ‘A Moment in Time’ show.

John McGinley interviewed Art O’Hagan who reminisced about the ‘good ole days’. He went on to sing a few songs and showed the large audience in attendance that he had lost none of his great voice. Also on the bill was Ben McNally who amazed everyone with his rendition of Dean Martin’s classics.

Copies of the DVD are being sold for £10 and all proceeds in aid of Foyle Hospice.

Copies can be got from Maurice Harkin, Michael Kennedy or from the Foyle Hospice office in Church Street

2PRs Claim Supervalu Springers Title

The Supervalu Springers League ended at Strabane Golf Club on Sunday last with outright victory going to the “2PRs” quartet of Eric Reid, Johnny Potts, Barry Reid and William Potts.  Going into the final round of matches the 2PRs, who had headed the league for several weeks, led by nine points, a lead that was comfortable but still left them vulnerable.  However, any doubts that they might have had proved to be unfounded.  A solid return of 78 points in the final week guaranteed them the league title by an impressive 13 point margin.  Runners-up, “The Lock-Keepers” (Pat Patton, John Duffy, Matt Keyes and Martin Gormley) had hoped to mount a last ditch challenge but a return of 74 points was never going to seriously threaten the champions. However, they can take much satisfaction from their overall performance over the past couple of months.  Third place went to “The Pros” (Keith Patterson, Noel Kelly, Jason Kelly and Declan Mullen) who leapfrogged a couple of teams by virtue of a strong final week showing which resulted in a return of 83 points.  “Always Late” (Liam Curry, Mark Sharkey, Tommy Sharkey and Anthony Brennan) posted 76 points on Sunday to take fourth place.

The top of the table reads:

1. 2PRs                        464 points

2. The Lock Keepers   451 points

3. The Pros                  448 points

4. Always late             447 points

The last of the Supervalu Sweeps produced the following result:

1. Raymond Allen and Sammy Devenney                 43 points

2. Brendan O’Neill and Seamus Walsh                      42 points

3. Foncie McNally and Frankie Houston                    41 points

Saturday’s singles stableford event saw victory go to Eamon Kennedy, his excellent 36 points over 15 holes giving him a one point advantage over second-placed Jude O’Neill. Also on the 35 point mark, and in third place, was Johnny McGonagle.  The consistent Denis Porter claimed yet another gross award this time with a fine 32 point effort.

Eugene Patton was in tremendous form in last week’s Thursday Club (Week Eight) as he posted a winning 38 points.  Only half a point back, though, was runner-up Ronnie Wiley who himself just held off the challenge of Pascal McGillian on the break of a tie.

The JJ Teams competitions will run until the end of March.  Last week’s event produced the following winners:

1. K. Gallagher, L. Doherty, M. McColgan, C. McGrath      102 points

2. F. McNally, P. McGarrigle, M. Forbes, G. Quinn              96 points

3. D. Taylor, F. McCay, B. McDonald, J. Malcolm               96 points

2PRs Nearly There!

David Mullen maintained the excellent form he has shown throughout the winter to take the stableford event at Strabane Golf Club on Saturday last. He posted an excellent 15 hole total of 38 points to get home on the break of a tie from the ever-improving George McCay.  Damian Lynch, assisted in no small measure by holing his tee shot at the par three second, carded a fine 37 points to finish third.  Enda Kennedy, off a scratch handicap, returned a sub-par round of 34 points to claim the gross award.

Sunday’s Supervalu Springers League is entering its the final stages.  Long time leaders, “2PRs” (Eric Reid, Barry Reid, Johnny Potts, William Potts), strengthened their hold at the top of the table, their combined scores of 84 points in Week 8 taking them to a 386 point accumulated total and, more importantly, extended their lead over their nearest challengers, “The Lock Keepers” by a crucial couple of points.  It would appear that the league is at their mercy, and it will take either a disastrous last week performance or a superhuman effort by the second placed quartet to deny “2PRs” the title.  Should “The Lock Keepers” (Pat Patton, John Duffy, Matt Keyes, Martin Gormley), however, rediscover the form they showed a couple of weeks ago when they powered into contention on the back of a superb 96 point aggregate, then they may yet upset the odds.  Going into the final round, they trail the leaders by nine points. “Always Late” (Liam Curry, Mark Sharkey, Tommy Sharkey, Anthony Brennan) leapfrogged “The Gravy Boys” to move into third place but, while they could yet make it into second place, their chances of topping the table would appear to be remote.

This week’s Supervalu Sweep produced the following result:

1. Martin McCallion & John Hegarty             49 points

2. John Duffy and Martin Gormley                45 points

3. John Brolly and Niall Coulter                     45 points

Results from the latest JJ Monday Team event:

1. M. Forbes, Paddy McGarrigle, F. McNally, G. Quinn       102pts

2. D. Porter, J. Wasson, G. Turner, H. Casey                         97pts

3. Paul McGarrigle, C. Patton, T. McDermott, L. Doherty    94pts

Colm McGrath produced an excellent round of 38 points to win Week 7 of the Thursday Club but only by the minimum margin of a half-point from in-form Pascal McGillian.  Liam McCool took third place with a solid 36 points.

Saturday golfers should note that timesheets will recommence on Saturday March 20. The full programme for the official season will be available shortly.

Junior girls will have a four week coaching session with PGA professional Noel Callan beginning this Friday (March 12) at Hill Valley Golf Centre.  All girls are encouraged to attend and new members would be particularly welcome.  For further details contact Girls’ Junior Convenor Catherine Neeson on 07742443803.
