Winter Cup Finalists Decided
The final of the Sperrin Springs Winter Cup at Strabane Golf Club will be contested this year by Ciaran Duffy and Andy Connolly who will take on Michael and Aidan Baldrick in what promises to be an intriguing encounter. The rapid thaw which followed the recent snows allowed play to proceed on Sunday last on a course which was in remarkably good condition. Duffy and Connolly made it through to this year’s decider by seeing off the spirited challenge of Dermot Corry and Sean McIntyre, while Cathal McLaughlin and Noel O’Kane came up just a bit short in their match against the Baldrick’s. The date for the final, and the third and fourth place play-off, has yet to be arranged and will depend very much on the weather, given that a return to wintry conditions is forecast for the end of the week.
The recipients of the section awards from the league stages of the competition have been finalised and are as follows:
Section A
- Keith Patterson and Noel Kelly
- Brian O’Kane and Damien Carey
- Brian Kelly and Michael Neeson
Section B
- John Brolly and Niall Coulter
- Paddy O’Kane and Frankie Connolly
- Michael Forbes (Sen.) and Billy Doherty
The Leo Kavanagh Memorial “Sperrin Springs” Winter Cup Dinner will be held in the clubhouse on Saturday (December 18) and, to facilitate the preparations of the catering staff, players are asked to indicate on the sheet posted on the club notice-board whether or not they will be attending. Music will be provided by the Jim Devine Karaoke Show.
A reminder that the Annual General Meeting of the Club will be held on Wednesday of this week, December 15, commencing at 8.00pm.
Finally, the discounted ticket offer for attending the Boxing Night and New Year’s Eve celebrations is still in place. Tickets are available at the clubhouse.
Course News – Sunday 12th
The course is open – 15 holes with temporary greens.
Holes closed are 9th, 10th and 11th. So please walk from 8th green to 12th tee-box.
Winter Cup
1st to 8th will be the first nine and 12th to 18th will be second nine.
Remember – temporary greens, shots will be ½ the difference and mats to be used in the semi-rough also.
Is there a thaw ahead?
Not to get any of your hopes up, but there is a thaw forecast for the weekend, weather (see what I did there) it comes quick enough for us to play golf is another question, so fingers crossed for the weekend.
Check out the BBC for a 5-day forecast.
Winter Cup Update

AGM – Wednesday 15th December
The Annual General Meeting of the Club will be held at 8.00pm on Wednesday December 15.
Snow wipes out Weekend Programme
The weekend snowfall put paid to any hopes of play at Strabane Golf Club on Saturday and Sunday. Thankfully, some of the scheduled fixtures earlier in the week were able to proceed. Tommy Forbes was in tremendous form in Week 8 of the Thursday Club racking up an outstanding 39 points to win the competition by a point from Frank McKay, with Jim Arbuckle a further point back in third place.
Current standings in the race for the coveted “Golfer of the Series” title are:
1. Jimmy Wasson 40 points
2. Denis Porter 23 points
3. Kevin Keegan 20 points
Last week’s JJ Teams event produced the following result:
1. F. McCay, B. McDonald, S. Taylor, J. Malcolm 98 points
2. J. Arbuckle, M. Harkin, P. McGillian, J. Duncan 98 points
3. K. Gallagher, C. McGrath, S. McFeeters, M. McColgan 98 points
The Sperrin Springs Winter Cup has reached the play-off stages, the draw for the first of the knockout rounds reading as follows:
Michael and Aidan Baldrick v Cathal McLaughlin and Noel O’Kane
Dermot Corry and Sean McInyre v Ciaran Duffy and Andy Connolly
Jim Potts and Declan Doherty can count themselves very unlucky to lose out on a place in the ‘semis’ despite finishing in joint second place in their group.
On the entertainment front, there are still a few tickets available for the Club Dinner which will be held in the clubhouse this Saturday (December 4), with the music provided by “Friends”.
Next Thursday (December 9) is the annual Christmas Quiz Night, commencing at 10.00pm. Members and visitors should note that a discounted double ticket is available for the Boxing Night and New Year’s Eve celebrations at the club.
Looking further ahead, the Annual General Meeting of the Club will be held at 8.00pm on Wednesday December 15.

McCusker in Inspired Form
Hugo McCusker’s tremendous run of form continued at Strabane Golf Club on Saturday last as he produced a sparkling 39 points to comfortably win the weekly singles event. Runner-up with 36 points was John Brolly who continues to improve with every round played, on this occasion just edging out Brian Kelly who carded 35 points to finish third.
The Sperrin Springs Winter Cup is nearing the end of the league stage with all the qualifying places still up for grabs. Last week’s leaders of Section A, Fred McGavigan and Maurice Doherty, crashed to defeat at the hands of Michael and Aidan Baldrick who now head the table with 18 points. Ciaran Duffy and Andy Connolly are well in touch in second place with Keith Patterson and Noel Kelly very much in the hunt in third place.
The positions after Week Six are:
1. Michael and Aidan Baldrick 18 points
2. Ciaran Duffy and Andy Connolly Jnr 17 points
3. Keith Patterson and Noel Kelly 16.5 points
The key matches in Section A this coming week are:
Michael and Aidan Baldrick v Brian O’Kane and Damian Carey
Ciaran Duffy and Andy Connolly v Fred McShane and Frankie Gallagher
In Section B, Dermot Corry and Sean MacIntyre got the best possible result in Sunday’s round of matches. Lying in third place going into last weekend, Corry and MacIntyre picked up maximum points while the two pairings above halved their match to leave the top of Section B thus:
1. Dermot Corry and Sean MacIntyre 19 points
2. Jim Potts and Declan Doherty 17.5 points
2. Cathal McLaughlin and Noel O’Kane 17.5 points
The draw for this Sunday sees Corry and MacIntyre take on McLaughlin and O’Kane, while Potts and Doherty have a difficult tie against John Brolly and Niall Coulter who are themselves still well placed to make the semi-finals.
Congratulations to Eoin O’Neill and Shay Callaghan on their victory in the final of the John J Duffy Junior Winter Cup. In a close fought decider, they defeated Ciaran Roary and Brendan McCrory by 2 and 1 to lift the title. Third place went to Jordan Arthur and Colin Campbell.
In the Section B Team Event, Ronan McHugh, Conor Byrne and Conor Bratton came out on top, just ahead of Brandon O’Neill, Michael P. Doherty and Conor Taylor.
Prize-winners in the Junior Winter Cup should attend the presentation of awards in the club-house this Saturday (November 27) at 3pm.
Last week’s Thursday Club winner was Fred McShane who just got home on count-back from second-placed Jimmy Wasson, both players posting excellent scores of 37 points. Dennis Porter was a couple of points back in third place.
The latest JJ Team event, played on Monday last, produce the following result:
1. Declan McDonnell, Dermot Cairns, Enda McDonnell, Pat Gallagher 90 points
2. Dennis Porter, Jimmy Wasson, George Turner, Hugh Casey 84 points
3. Foncie McNally, Paddy McGarrigle, Gerry Quinn, Michael Forbes 82 points
The latest Bridge Club winners were Mary Gallagher and Claire McGrath, with Dympna Boyle and Dora Forbes filling the runner’s-up berth.

McFeeters Impresses in Saturday Singles
Stuart McFeeters amassed an impressive 37 point tally to win the weekend singles event at Strabane Golf Club by a point from runner-up Declan Doherty. Hugo McCusker carded a typically solid 35 points to take third place with the gross prize going to the ever-consistent Keith Patterson.
In Sunday’s Sperrin Springs Winter Cup, Section A leaders Keith Patterson and Noel Kelly crashed to defeat against the new front-runners in the division, Fred McGavigan and Maurice Doherty. Michael and Aidan Baldrick seem to have lost their momentum a bit over the past couple of weeks. They lost again on Sunday last and spurned the opportunity to re-establish themselves at the head of affairs. A significant move came from Ciaran Duffy and Andy Connolly who have come through the pack to mount a serious challenge. The top fixture in this section next week sees McGavigan and Doherty take on the Baldrick brothers.
The top of Section A reads thus:
1. Fred McGavigan and Maurice Doherty 15.5 points
2. Keith Patterson and Noel Kelly 14.5 points
3. Michael and Aidan Baldrick 14.0 points
3. Ciaran Duffy and Andy Connolly Jun. 14.0 points
The top of Section B is even more congested with a half-point separating the leading three contenders. Jim Potts and Declan Doherty have been joined at the top by Cathal McLaughlin and Noel O’Kane. Last week’s leaders, Dermot Corry and Sean MacIntyre slipped back into third place though are far from out of it at this stage. Indeed, with the two leaders drawn to play each other this coming Sunday, the appearance of head of the table could change dramatically.
Current standings in Section B are:
1. Jim Potts and Declan Doherty 15.5 points
1. Cathal McLaughlin and Noel O’Kane 15.5 points
3. Dermot Corry and Sean MacIntyre 15.0 points
In the John J. Duffy Junior Winter Cup, Brendan McCrory and Ciaran Roarty have won through to the final where they will meet Eoin O’Neill and Shay Callaghan, with the decider scheduled for Sunday next.
Positions in the ongoing Junior League are as follows:
Section A
1. Ryan McGowan and Adam Cole 13 points
2. Jordan Arthur and Colin Campbell 11.5 points
Section B
1. Ronan McHugh, Conor Byrne, Conor Bratton 34 points
2. Brandon O’Neill, Michael P Doherty, Conor Taylor 28 points
Despite the storms which rampaged across the course in mid-week, the intrepid Thursday Club stalwarts managed to complete Week Six of the series. Kevin Keegan’s 30 points was the best of the day, just edging out Jason Kelly and Jimmy Henderson who each carded 29 points and finished second and third respectively.
The latest round of JJ’s Monday team event produced the following result:
1. Oliver McNally, Michael Doyle, Tommy Forbes, Dermot Cairns 103 points
2. Keith Patterson, Noel Kelly, David Mullan, Billy Doherty 97.5 points
3, Niall Coulter, Michael Baldrick, John Brolly 92 points
Happy 50th – Pat Sharkey

McNally One-Two on Saturday
Albert McNally produced a stunning 38 points over 15 holes to comfortably win the Saturday Singles at Strabane Golf Club. In second place, just getting home on the break of a tie, was Oliver McNally, his 35 point return matched by third placed Dermot Corry. Young Ryan McGowan continued his great run of form by the taking the gross award with a solid 34 points. Winners in the coming weeks should note that the presentation of prizes for the Saturday events will be held the next day (Sunday) at 6.30pm.
Trying to predict the likely outcome of the group stages in this year’s Sperrin Springs Winter Cup is virtually impossible. After Sunday’s round of games the situation in both groups is far from clear. Group A is headed by Keith Patterson and Noel Kelly who inflicted the first defeat of the campaign on Michael and Aidan Baldrick, and in the process relegating them to second place in the table. Fred McGavigan and Maurice Doherty moved into contention and in next week’s top clash will meet the current leaders.
The top of Table A reads:
1. Noel Kelly and Keith Patterson 14 points
2. Michael and Aidan Baldrick 13 points
3. Fred McGavigan and Maurice Doherty 12 points
In Group B, leaders Dermot Corry and Sean MacIntyre consolidated their position, dropping only a half point to their nearest challengers. Jim Potts and Declan Doherty moved into a share of second place with John Brolly and Niall Coulter.
The position in Table B is:
1. Dermot Corry and Sean MacIntyre 14 points
2. Jim Potts and Declan Doherty 12.5 points
3. John Brolly and Niall Coulter 12.5 points
In the John J. Duffy Junior Winter Cup, the situation after four weeks is:
1. Ryan McGowan and Adam Cole 11 points
2. Eoin O’Neill and Shay Callaghan 10.5 points
3. Patrick Roarty and Lisa Patton 9.5 points
The Thursday Club reached Week 5 last week with Jimmy Wasson posting a winning score of 38 points, one better than runner-up Liam McCool. On the same mark, and in third place, was Michael Baldrick.

C.R.Y. Night Golf – Result
What a night!!!
Last night – Friday 5th November (Guy Fawkes night), Strabane Golf Club had some fireworks of their own.
70+ golfers played in the first Night Golf competition held in the north of Ireland.
We were blessed with a great night which helped make this a night to remember.
When James Patton approached our Captain Seamus Friel about having a golf competition at night time, Seamus thought he was mad!! Anyway a few months later, after a lot preparation, we played in in the dark. Glow-in-the-dark balls were being launched into the air and golfers were having a brilliant time, we even had a few birdies!!!!
Along with all the craic there was a serious side to the night, this year the Captain’s chosen charity was C.R.Y., and all proceeds went to this worthy cause. Louise McShane from the charity was there last night selling tickets and adding to the total. Even her daughter, got into the act by winning first prize

Results
1st Frankie Connolly 15pts
2nd Gary Duffy 14pts BOT
3rd Sharon Haughey 14pts
Birdies – Pat ‘The Pub’ McAneny and Kevin Neeson
Congratulation to Frankie, hopefully this isn’t the last ‘Night Golf’ competition and he can defend his title in the future.

Wylie clinches Final Qualifier
John Wylie was the clear winner of the final qualifier of the season at Strabane Golf Club. Playing in the Saturday Singles, Wylie posted a superb 43 points to win by four from runner-up Fred McGavigan, who had the best of several scores of 39 points. On the same mark were third-placed Sean Sweeney and Jim Harley who finished fourth. The gross category was won by Ben Corry with 34 points, while Chris Timoney and Roy Patterson took the nines.
In Week 4 of the Thursday Club, Enda McDonnell carded 39 points to take the top award. Paul McGarrigle had a similar return to finish as runner-up while Noel Kelly was just a point back in third place.
Monday’s JJ Team event produced the following result:
1. J. Callan, H. McGarrigle, J. Coyle, P. McGillian 104 points
2. N. Coulter, J. Brolly, M. Baldrick 100.5 points
3. D. Porter, G. Turner, J. Wasson, H. Casey 100 points
Section A of the Sperrin Springs Winter Cup is led by the only pairing yet to drop a point in the league. Michael and Aidan Baldrick’s unblemished record extended to three matches on Sunday last and consequently they lead the section with 12 points. Just a point back, though, is the experienced duo of Keith Patterson and Noel Kelly who themselves remain unbeaten. The leading two pairings have already drawn away from the rest of the field, with the nearest challengers on 8 points. They are Noel McConnell and Roy Patterson, Stephen and George McCay, Fred McGavigan and Maurice Doherty. This coming Sunday could be highly significant with the top two matched up against each other and no doubt those in the chasing pack will be hoping that the leaders both drop points.
Things are a lot tighter in Section B with a couple of points covering the top half-dozen teams. Leading the way at the moments, with 10.5 points, are Dermot Corry and Sean MacIntyre. Liam Doherty and Ryan Patton are just a half-point back in second place, with Paul and Pat Cooke on 9.5 points in third place. As in Section A, the top two contenders face one another on Sunday, a contest that will impact considerably on the top of the league table.
Latest results from the Bridge Club:
Winners: Mary Gallagher and Claire McGrath
Second: Garvan Godfrey and Frankie Houston
Finally, the annual Club Dinner has been re-scheduled for Saturday December 4.

First Win for McGinley
The Saturday Singles at Strabane Golf Club produced a close finish with Kevin McGinley and Junior Captain Ryan McGowan each posting superb scores of 43 points. On count-back, McGinley was adjudged the winner, recording his first victory at the club. Jim Callaghan was back in third place on 40 points, the same score as fourth placed Cathal McLaughlin. Stephen McCay carded a three over par 72 to take the gross award, while the nines went to Dermot Corry and Stephen Quinn.
After two weeks of the Sperrin Springs Winter Cup, the league tables are beginning to take shape. In Section A, Noel McConnell and Roy Patterson are joint leaders with Michael and Aidan Baldrick, with both pairings having a maximum return of 8 points. Just a half point back are the ever-dangerous Keith Patterson and Noel Kelly.
John Brolly and Niall Coulter are the only pair in Section B who have yet to drop a point. They lead on 8 points with Dermot Corry and Sean MacIntyre in second place on 7. A further half point back are Liam Doherty and Ryan Patton who share the third spot with Michael Forbes Sen. and Billy Doherty.
The JJ Teams event on Monday continues to attract a large entry. Last week’s results were:
1. J. Arbuckle, M. Harkin, P. McGillian, S. Diamond 112 points
2. D. Mullan, M. Baldrick, N. Coulter, J. Brolly 110 points
3. D. McGinley, L. McCool, C. Doherty, A. Callaghan 110 points

Winter Season Opener
The first of the Winter Saturday Singles events at Strabane Golf Club on Saturday went to 11-handicapper Danny Duffy who posted 41 points to just get home on the break of a tie from Sean Devine. Kieran Martin finished third on 39 points, a tally matched by fourth-placed Pat Patton. Paddy Kennedy produced a flawless level par 69 to wrap up the gross category, with Eddie McCrea and Noel O’Kane taking the first and second nine awards respectively.
The latest round of the Thursday Club was won by Jim Douglas, his 41 point return giving him a two point winning margin over George Turner. A further point back was third-placed Tommy Falconer.
Week Two of the JJ Team Competition produced the following result:
1. N. Coulter, A. Baldrick, J. Brolly 117 points
2. J. Coyle, F. Friel, F. O’Kane, H. McGarrigle 107 points
3. K. Keegan, J. McDermott, C. Klam, R, Wiley 106 points
The first series of matches in the Sperrin Springs Winter League were played on Sunday last and, while there were some very impressive opening performances, it will take another week or two before the table begins to take shape.
The final of the Teams Classic was held on Saturday with most pundits predicating a close fought encounter. Whilst some of the individual matches did indeed go down to the wire, the overall result was never really in doubt as the Tommy Forbes Catering squad ran out as comfortable winners over a gallant, but ultimately outgunned, Haughey’s Costcutters outfit.
Finally, congratulations to Keith Patterson on his elevation to the “Golfer of the Year” pedestal, a position richly deserved given his consistency over the season when hardly a week went by without his name figuring in a nett or gross category. A mention also of runner-up David Mullen who has made such strides over the season and is now recognised as one of the club’s bright new talents.

CT takes Final Event
The McHugh Oils Medal brought to a close the regular season at Strabane Golf Club on Saturday last. Despite a stiff easterly breeze which swept across the course throughout the day, scoring was of the highest quality. Best round of the day was Chris Timoney’s superb nett 63, his winning effort giving him a one shot advantage over runner-up Barry Whyte. John Brolly carded a nett 65 to finish in third place while Conal Cooke dropped only one shot to par in securing the gross prize with an excellent 70. Mark McCrea continued in his current rich vein of form by taking the Category One award with a nett 66. The Category Two prize went to Paul McConway with a 68 nett, with Martin McCallion topping Category Three with a nett 66. Adrian McLaughlin and Jim Callaghan had the best first and second nines respectively.
As summer golf ends, so the winter season gets under way. The Monday JJ Teams event kicked off last week and produced the following result.
1. D. Porter, M. Arnold, J. Wasson, H. Casey 94 points
2. K. Gallagher, S. McFeeters, J. Douglas, L. Doherty 92 points
Week One of the Thursday Club was won by Adrian McGonagle, his fine 40 point return getting him home by a point from Ronnie Wiley. Frankie Gallagher marked his return to the game by compiling an impressive 39 points to finish third.
In ladies’ golf, the Final Day Scramble was won by the trio of Mandy Coyne, Lisa Patton and Mary Casey, their 26 point total giving them a point to spare over Norma Brogan, Maeve Corry and Lorna Duffy. In third place, and also on 26 points, were Catherine Neeson, Loretta Coyne and Noreen McNally.
Congratulations to Mandy Coyne whose consistently high performances over the summer have deservedly earned her the prestigious “Golfer of the Year” accolade.

Tickets for the annual Club Dinner which will be held on Saturday October 30 are available in the clubhouse.

Successful Outing to Greencastle
Strabane Golf Club’s annual Captain’s Outing was held at Greencastle GC on Saturday last. One hundred and twenty players made the journey to the excellent North Donegal venue to participate in Mr Seamus Friel’s event, a fitting tribute to a Captain who has devoted himself tirelessly to the Club throughout the season. Thankfully, the miserable weather which had been forecast earlier in the week did not materialise and play was able to proceed in fairly benign conditions. Top scorer on the day was Hugo McCusker, his fine effort of 41 points just getting him home on the break of a tie from Jim Callaghan. Jude O’Neill was just a point back in third place with Kevin Keegan a further point adrift in fourth. Aidan Boyle had the best gross return of the day, while Pat and Martin Patton took the first and second nines respectively.
The last of the season’s regular Thursday competitions was won by Danny Duffy who posted 40 points to hold off the challenge of runner-up Joe Elliott by a single point. Vincent Bradley continued his recent run of form to take third place with 38 points, while Enda Kennedy’s 36 point return assured him of the gross category.
The final Monday Open, held on September 27, went to Martin McDermott with a fine haul of 40 points. The ever-consistent Keith Patterson had a 39 point return to fill the runner’s-up berth while Michael Doyle took third spot with 38 points. Kieran Doherty topped the gross category with 34 points.
Sunday’s mixed foursomes celebrated the success of that format throughout the season, with the regular Wednesday event having attracted an enthusiastic and loyal following over the summer months. Darren Crawford and Lisa Patton took the honours in the season’s finale, helped in no small measure by Darren’s hole-in-one at the par three seventh. Their combined tally of 40 points gave them a point to spare over Noel and Mary McCrory. Denis Porter and Annie O’Hagan took third place with 37 points, while Aidan Boyle and Lauren Patton had the best gross return.
The previous Wednesday event was won by the husband and wife pairing of Pat and Maeve Corry. They posted 23 points over the shortened course, one better than Kevin Keegan and Alison Curry. Joe Elliott and Annie O’Hagan were a further point back in third place.
The penultimate event of the official season was the Club Championship. In the gross section, Paddy Kennedy and Ben Corry each shot excellent scores of 67, with the former getting up on count-back to claim the “champion” accolade. Keith Patterson had a steady 70 to take third place.
The nett section ended in a three-way tie, with Mark McCrea declared the winner after a count-back. Runner-up was Denis Porter with Liam Patton underlining his return to form by taking third. All three players had excellent returns of 65 nett. Eddie McCrea carded a nett 66 to finish fourth.
Last week’s Thursday Club Competition was won by Damian McGranaghan with a score of 38 points, one better than second-placed Adrian McLaughlin. Jimmy Henderson was third with 35 points, while Enda Kennedy topped the gross section with a two-over par 71.
In ladies’ golf, the MacMillan Cancer Relief competition was won with 30 points by Mandy Coyne. Lauren Patton had the best return, 27 points, in the 0-24 handicap section, with Lorna Duffy topping the 25-36 category with 28 points.
Lisa Patton was the runaway winner of Tuesday’s Members’ Prize, her 35 point return giving her plenty to spare over the field. Anne Sharkey carded 31 points to head the 0-24 category, with Caroline Connolly’s 29 points best in the 25-36 section.
The last of the season’s matchplay events to be decided, the Worchester Cup, was won by Lorna Duffy and Declan Lynch who just shaded Monica and Maurice McGettigan in a tense decider.
