Sperrin Springs Winter Cup Reaches Half-Way
The Sperrin Springs Winter Cup reached the half-way stage on Sunday last at Strabane Golf Club. Though conditions were far from perfect after the rains of the past few weeks, players were able to complete the Week Five series. Freddie Patterson and Mark McDermott are in a fairly commanding position at the head of Section A after taking their second successive maximum haul. They lead on 15.5 points, with Foncie McNally and Anthony Brennan in second place with 13 points. Noel and Jason Kelly moved into third place with 11.5 points. They could well benefit from the fact that the two leading pairings will contest the top match in the section this Sunday.
David Mullen and Bernard McShane have a slender advantage in Section B, their 13.5 total giving them only half a point to spare over Roy Patterson and Brian Millar, with a handful of other pairings very much within striking distance. Saturday’s Singles was played over a shortened course, yet winner Brian Cairns amasses an impressive 28 points to win by one from the consistent Foncie McNally. Kieran O’Neill was a further shot back in third pace, with Enda Kennedy taking the gross award with 23 points.
Pat McDaid was a recent winner of the Men’s Singles, showing good form to hold off the challenge of Paddy Doyle and Declan O’Hare. All three players posted excellent tallies of 34 points, while Danny Duffy took the gross prize with 33 points.
In Week 7 of the Thursday Club, the winners were:
1. Pat Sharkey 26 points
2. Cahir Doherty 26 points
3. Jim Arbuckle 25 points
The JJ Team event played on Monday last produced the following result:
1. K. Keegan, R. Wylie, R. Allen 77 points
2. D. McGinley, N. McCrory, L. McCool, Angus Callaghan 68 points
C. Klam, Paul McGarrigle, J. Roarty` 65 points
Finally, players should note that from this week, the use of ‘mats’ is obligatory.
