Saturday Singles at Strabane Golf Club

Despite the horrendous conditions which prevailed throughout last Saturday, a couple of dozen players braved the wind and rain to compete in the Saturday Singles at Strabane Golf Club. Jason Kelly produced a near-miraculous 38 points to take the spoils ahead of Denis Porter who mustered a creditable 35 points.  Stephen McCay posted 33 points to finish third, with the gross category prize going to Paddy Kennedy with 32 points.

The week began with the usual JJ’s Team competition on Monday last which produced the following result:
1. D. Porter, G. Turner, J. Wasson, H. Casey            83 points
2. F. McNally, M. Forbes, P. McGarrigle, J. Duncan        79 points
3. P. Doyle, P. McDaid, T. McGranaghan, P. McAneny    75 points.

Kevin Keegan won Series 5 of the Thursday Club with a steady 37 points, one better than runner-up Stuart McFeeters.  Brian Haughey was a further point back in third place.

In Section A of the Sperrin Springs Winter Cup, Freddie Patterson and Mark McDermott took maximum points from Sunday’s match to reclaim top spot in the league.  They took their tally to 11.5 points while Peter Doherty (Jun) and Barry Patterson moved into second place with 10 points.  Foncie McNally and Anthony Brennan are a point behind in third place, with Patrick McCrossan and John Tinney currently in a tie for fourth place with Chris McDermott and Michael Neeson.  Each of these pairings has 8 points.  The key match in this section next Sunday will be the match-up between the two leading contenders.

Things are a bit tighter at the head of Section B, with half a point covering the top four protagonists.  David Mullen and Bernard McShane lead the way with 10 points with the next three pairing all on 9.5 points.  They are: Roy Patterson and Brian Millar; Sean MacIntyre and Chris Timoney; Cathal McLaughlin and Noel O’Kane.  This coming Sunday should provide clarify the situation somewhat as the draw for Week 4 has thrown up the following duels:
Mullen and McShane v MacIntyre and Timoney
Patterson and Millar v McLaughlin and O’Kane.

There is a double bill on entertainment in the clubhouse this coming weekend.  On Friday night there is a special charity table quiz in memory of Joe Patton, with all proceeds going to the Foyle Hospice.  On Saturday, “T-Junction” will provide the music for the Hallowe’en celebrations.
