Strabane Golfers Battle The Elements in Dunfanaghy

One hundred and thirty six Strabane golfers headed off to Dunfanaghy on Saturday last for Mr Eamon McCay’s Captain’s Outing and encountered some of the worst conditions of the year.  Gale force winds swept across the north Donegal course ensuring that scoring would be far removed from the 40 plus tallies that have been the norm throughout the summer season.  Only a handful of scores struggled into the low thirties, with three players posting respectable totals of 33 points.  Best of these on countback was Freddie Patterson who duly collected the top award. Johnny Potts and Jim Callaghan finished second and third respectively, also with 33 points, while the consistent Jason Kelly took fourth place, a point adrift of the leading trio. Not unexpectedly, Ben Corry had the best gross return of 26 points. The categories went to Barry Patterson (30 points), Eddie McBrearty (32 points) and William Potts (31 points), while Odran McGettigan (20 points) and Patsy Wilson (19 points) picked up the nines.  Only three players managed two’s – Mark McColgan, Sammy Devenney and Stephen Alexander.

The weekend’s double header was completed on Sunday with the final day of the mixed pairs season.  There was an excellent entry of 30 pairs for the competition which featured both a flag and stableford format.

The winners were:

Flag Format

3. Lorna Duffy and Karl Barr        19th fairway

Week Two of the Thursday Club produced high quality golf with George Turner just getting home ahead of Danny Duffy, with both players carding excellent scores of 42 points.  One point back in third place was Noel Redden.

In ladies’ golf, Rosemary Wilson was the top performer in the O2 Challenge, her 32 points giving her a couple to spare over the field. Mandy Coyne posted 30 points to take the 0-24 category prize, with Maeve Crowe (28 points) the leading player in the 25-36 category.

While the men were battling the elements in Dunfanaghy on Saturday, the ladies enjoyed a “Men Away – Ladies Play” stableford event at the Ballycolman course. It produced the following result:

1. Dympna Doherty    27 points
2. Lorna Duffy    25 points
3. Mary Casey        25 points

The last of the mid-week pairs events was held on Wednesday last.  The top three pairings all finished on 16 points with Philomena Cooke and Sammy Devenney declared winners on the break of a tie. Bernie and Brian O’Kane finished second, Imelda Doherty and Denis Porter taking the third spot.
