Where Are They Now?

Strabane Golf Club was formed in 1909 and this year celebrates its centenary. Strabane boasts a repertoire of golfers, who competed at senior level golf. In an interview with Enda Kennedy, Irish and UK post office champion, former Ulster representative and winner of 14 senior scratch cups, Enda was quick to reveal that Brian Patton was the capitalist of all senior golf in Strabane.

Brian, also an Ulster player and runner up in 2 North of Ireland amateur events was the role model for many young golfers. Liam McCool, is club professional in Slieve Russell, Co. Cavan and one the most famous golf courses in the world, The Belfry. Liam’s sister Lynn Mc Cool, a former Irish representative and amateur winner is head professional in Irelands prestigious K-Club. Seamus Duffy, is a coach for the Golfing Union of Ireland and is now based in the epicenter of golf coaching in Greenmount agriculture centre. Geff Loughrey, former coach of Irish superstar Rauri McIlroy is currently head professional in Roganstown, Dublin. Shaun Devenney, had an illustrious amateur career, winner of an Irish boys tournament and several scratch cups, Shaun is now head professional in Roe Park, Limavady. Noel Callan is golfing professional in Roe Valley, Rossapena, Hill Valley and Letterkenny.

Although these people have made it to the status of professional golfer, Strabane Golf Club has had talented amateurs. Helen Jones, Irish and Ulster representative has won many woman events over Ireland. John Callan, a former Irish and Ulster player and winner of an Irish Boys pallet. In this hundredth year of Strabane Golf Club, it is important to recognize the success of the past, but it’s also important to encourage success for the future.
