Cecil Crompton was in scintillating form in Saturday’s Stableford event at Strabane Golf Club. The 14-handicapper amassed an incredible 40 points over the 15-hole course to win by two from runner-up Brian O’Neill. Third place went to Albert McNally who is in such a rich vein of form at the moment. Keith Patterson’s 34 points assured him of the gross prize.

The week’s programme at the club kicked off with the usual Monday team event. Results are as follows:

2. J. Arbuckle, M. Harkin, P. McGillian, S. Diamond 86 points
3. T. McGranaghan, P. Doyle, P. McAneny, P. McDaid 86 points.

Week Six of the Thursday Club saw Albert McNally notch up yet another victory, his 35.5 return edging him home ahead of Ciaran Kelly whose 35 points gave him a halfpoint to spare over Paddy Doyle. With only a couple of weeks remaining in the Supervalu Springers league, “Easy Money” have donned the leader’s mantle after a superb Week Seven performance. They accumulated 77 points to surge to the head of the table, taking their overall score to 144.5 points. Early pacesetters “Twilight Zone” saw their advantage wiped out but still managed 67 points to hang on to second place. If the “Likely Lads” maintain the form they showed on Sunday they could well improve on their current third place. They carded an impressive 73 points to take their total to 138.5.

Supervalu Sweep winners were:
1. Paddy O’Kane and Frankie Connolly 39 points
2. John Tinney and John Hegarty 39 points
3. Sean McCrossan and Damian Lynch 38 points

On the entertainment front, tickets have gone on sale in the clubhouse for the Easter Sunday spectacular when the fabulous Flash Harry will be on stage. Early booking is advised for this premier showman who just a few weeks ago delighted a packed Odyssey Arena in Belfast.

Results February 15th 2009

With the upturn in the weather and the significant easing of the underfoot conditions,it was almost predictable that scoring would be of high quality in Saturday’s singles event at Strabane Golf Club. Hugo McCusker was the top performer on the day, his superb 39 point return giving him a one point winning margin. Albert McNally has been in outstanding form throughout the winter and yet another 38 points on Saturday gave him the runners-up spot ahead of Senan Roarty who had a similar return. Enda Kennedy, playing off a +1 handicap, posted 32 points to take the gross category award.

With Sunday’s Supervalu Springers able to proceed, it meant that there was a full weekend programme at the club, the first in several weeks. Early leaders, The Twilight Zone, strengthened their place at the head of the league by taking their total to an impressive 73.5 points. Nearest challengers, Two R&P’s, currently sit on 71 points, with Villa Four in third place on 68 points.

The Week Six winning pairing was Charlie Patton and Brian Cairns with 42 points. Eric Reid and William Potts returned 41 points to finish second with Liam McDevitt and Maurice Doherty in third place with 39 points.

Only three weeks of the league remains and these will be played out in the greensomes format with all scores to count. Tommy Forbes was the latest winner of the Thursday Club. He carded 32 points, one better than runner-up Mark Sharkey. Billy Doherty was a further couple of points back in third place.

Despite the cancellation of the Saturday programme at Strabane Golf Club, the Supervalu Springers team event finally got under way the following day. Early leaders are the “Twilight Zone” who posted 34.5 points to ease ahead of joint second placed the “Wiggle Waggers” and “Villa Four.” Both these groupings have 33 points. Undoubtedly, the picture will change greatly over the coming weeks, weather permitting.

Liam McCool was the latest winner in the Thursday Club, his 37 points giving him a one point advantage over runner-up Stuart McFeeters. Albert Mcnally was a further point back in third place.

2. S. McFeeters, M. McColgan, K. Gallagher, L. Doherty 91 points
3. F. McNally, P. Gallagher, M. Forbes, J. Duncan 89 points.

As part of the celebrations to mark the centenary of Strabane Golf Club this year, there will be an Inter-Pub Golf Team Challenge, commencing Sunday April 26.
