In common with sporting events across the country, the weather has played havoc with the new year schedule at Strabane Golf Club. There was no “third-time lucky” for the Springers League as it again fell victim to the Sunday storms. It is still hoped to get the league off the ground next weekend – what should have been Week Four!

A handful of events did manage to complete and all of them produced very tight finishes. Stephen Alexander carded 33 points to win last Saturday’s singles, with Fred McGavigan and Declan Lynch matching the winner’s tally to take second and third respectively. Ben Corry topped the gross category with 27 points. In the weekend stableford, Seamus Walsh compiled a tidy 32 points to top the leaderboard ahead of Mark McCrea and John J. Duffy who had a similar return. The Thursday Club (series 2) got underway with Hugo McCusker notching up a victory. Pascal McGillian and Frankie Devine took the minor placings, with all three players finishing on 25 points.

On the entertainment front, the popular Thursday Quiz night has recommenced. There will be a hot buffet on Valentine’s Night in the clubhouse promising quality food and value for money. Bookings are currently being taken for parties etc. throughout 2009.

Whilst the inclement weather caused an enforced cancellation of all the weekend fixtures at Strabane Golf Club, most of the scheduled mid-week events were able to proceed unhindered. Paddy Doyle 33 points in Week 16 of the Thursday Club gave him a one-point advantage over runner-up Liam P. Doherty. Third place went to Pat McDaid, also with a return of 32 points.

In the Final Day of Phase One of the Thursday Club, Terence McDermott topped the leaderboard with a fine 36 point tally, though he was pushed all the way by Enda McDonnell who only lost out on the break of a tie. Albert McNally was a point adrift in third place, with Tommy Falconer’s 35 points easing him into the fourth spot.
